Garden Variety Terrorists
Mon, 28 Apr 2008 05:20:44 PDT
We generally think of environmentalists as a thoughtful lot, committed to achieving peaceful change. And virtually all of them—or us—are. But a tiny environmental fringe group has been committing arson and other acts of violence in the name of environmental causes, causing monstrous damage and endangering lives. The worst of these groups calls itself the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), and the FBI has termed it a domestic terrorist organization. ELF has most recently been in the news for torch
Japanese government bonds may be a good buy (International Herald Tribune)
Mon, 28 Apr 2008 05:21:19 PDT
A reappraisal of rate trends in Japan and the United States sent Japanese government bond prices crashing last week to levels that may provide a buying opportunity.
Scientific American on open-access science
Mon, 28 Apr 2008 05:21:47 PDT
Great read at Scientific American: Science 2.0 -- Is Open Access Science the Future? A small but growing number of researchers (and not just the younger ones) have begun to carry out their work via the wide-open tools of Web 2.0. And although their efforts are still too scattered to be called a movement—yet—their experiences to date suggest that this kind of Web-based “Science 2.0” is not only more collegial than traditional science but considerably more productive. It's full of some really goo
CeBIT Sydney 2008 Anyone?
Mon, 28 Apr 2008 05:27:24 PDT
We’re planning to hit Cebit 2008 in Sydney this year. Dates of the show are 20-22 May, but I think we’ll just fly up for the Wednesday since it’s generally when all the action happens. Won’t be holding our own stall this year but perhaps next year we may officially grace the grounds of Cebit once again… We’ll be armed with digital cams and our PDAs. If you want to catch us, we’ll be Twittering our whereabouts on the day and what we think is cool! About CeBIT CeBIT Australia is Australasia’
Twittering for Jesus
Mon, 28 Apr 2008 05:27:45 PDT
Perry Noble "Twitters." So does Tony Morgan. What does this mean? Well, it simply means that these guys are sharing their lives throughout the day through Twitter.com, telling the whole world what they're up to during the day. (For example, recently Perry was working on the plans for Mother's Day at Newspring Church. Tony was headed off to a leadership strategy meeting to discuss NewSpring's future. Have you ever heard of Twitter? If not, maybe it's time to spread your wings and discover a new

Fashion trends in an uncertain economy
Mon, 28 Apr 2008 05:32:13 PDT
Fashion trends in an uncertain economy 4:30am ET Recession or no, middle-class fashionistas are dressing fashion forward. Their determination to follow the latest trends is playing out in disparate ways -- buying pricier but fewer haute style pieces, or opting for a wardrobe of knock-offs that won't strain the budget.
RIMS begins
Mon, 28 Apr 2008 05:34:46 PDT
Last week it was the World Health Care Congress (perhaps the best conference I've ever attended in terms of content and quality). This week it is RIMS, the annual property and casualty get together, where brokers schmooze and vendors vend and risk managers are feted by carriers, TPAs, managed care firms and consultants. Here's what I'm looking for at RIMS 2008. New and different approaches to managed care, approaches that are not merely based on discounted care, but outcomes. And not just lip
Google at Gilbane Conference: Quality Search is Critical
Mon, 28 Apr 2008 05:39:12 PDT
For those attending the upcoming Gilbane conference who are more on the geeky side of the spectrum, get stoked: Udi Manber, a Google Vice President of Engineering, will start off the annual San Francisco conference on June 18th at 8:30am with a discussion on Google's search quality and continued innovation. While Google's success is generally thought of as being a result of their use of link activity and PageRank to supplement keyword search, this is in fact just one of many signals that help p
Yahoo plans to be more social
Mon, 28 Apr 2008 05:41:21 PDT
Despite the fact that they have a presence in the market, all have played catch-up more than they've led and none has been able to fully cash in on one of the most hyped internet trends ever. I've questioned the true long-term business potential of the social networking market, but when one looks at the $15bn valuation Facebook has received from investors and the recent $850m purchase of Bebo by AOL, it's clear that major internet companies could have benefited, at least in the short-term, had t
Make & Take Gourmet: Meal Prep Franchisor Takes Failures in Stride
Mon, 28 Apr 2008 05:47:49 PDT
(FranchisePick.Com) Some new franchisors might be alarmed when two of their first franchises fail and their franchisees lose hundreds of thousands of dollars. But for Make & Take Gourmet founder Michele Bellso, franchise failures seem to be no big deal. According to Bob Niedt’s initial story and a followup piece this past Saturday in the Syracuse, NY Post-Standard, two Make & Take Gourmet meal assembly kitchen franchisees have hung up their aprons for good - within a week of one an
Stocks Building Bases
Mon, 28 Apr 2008 05:48:31 PDT
We start the week by studying stocks that are currently building bases. I decided to specifically narrow the list down to stocks that are building cup shaped bases. Each stock presented today contains respectable fundamental characteristics such as strong earnings and revenue. Many, if not all of the stocks below have been covered within the past 6-12 months on the blog. A few of the stocks listed are building their first major bases since their spectacular up-trends in 2007. Each stock has ga
