ABC News’s Bret Hovell reports: It's been almost two weeks since Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill., characterized small town Pennsylvania voters as "bitter", but citizens of Inez, Ky. haven't forgotten. During a town hall meeting with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., an eastern Kentucky Republican state senator named Brandon Smith asked McCain about Obama's comments, in which the Illinois Democrat said economic conditions cause some small town voters to cling to guns and religion. Smith said he took t

A la the entry below, I came across a couple references to early “non-traditional” body piercing that I’d like to repost here. This first one, about a Madison piercing, is from Rack Rope And Red-Hot Pinchers: A History of Torture and It’s Instruments by Geoffrey Abbott (Headline Book Publishing, 1993). It reads, Chain through the Neck In the more exotic parts of the world, more exotic punishments were administered. In China, monks who broke their sacred vows were punished by having a hole bur
The Wall Street Journal: That ‘Insulting’ Pope
Wed, 23 Apr 2008 14:22:11 PDT
Our point, evidently missed by the Congressman, was that the U.S. Catholic Church has traditionally been an immigrant church, helping to settle and assimilate generations of Irish, Polish and Italian newcomers. The pope made a similar argument during his visit last week in separate remarks to U.S. educators. "Countless dedicated religious sisters, brothers and priests together with selfless parents have, through Catholic schools, helped generations of immigrants to rise from poverty and take the

Whatley: ‘Bored bored bored bored’
Wed, 23 Apr 2008 14:23:45 PDT
Mr Uber Mobile, James Whatley, is uninspired by the mobile industry this week. I get this now and again. It happens — it’s strange, but there you go. You’d think that the launch of two new Nokias would have got him moving? Not really. How about the brand new Nokia N95 8GB he’s brandishing? Not really. Things are so back to front that, traditionally a loyal Jaiku user, Whatley has even been playing round more on Twitter. Over to him: - - - I’ve been scratching my head for some time about w
Ballooning Priest Lost at Sea
Wed, 23 Apr 2008 14:24:43 PDT
A Brazilian priest is lost at sea after strapping himself to 1000 helium party balloons and setting off over the ocean to break the 19-hour party-favor flight record, according to the Times. Had the whole unfortunate affair not ended quite so tragically, we would likely have a hearty chuckle over his ambitious endeavor. This flight—a culmination of jungle and wilderness survival courses—was to raise money for a spiritual truck stop. No joke. The massive pile of brightly-colored inflatables
